July 2, 1862: Morril Land Grant Act

  • First proposed in 1857, vetoed in 1859, resubmitted and passed by 1862.
  • Each eligible state received 30,000 acres of federal land for each member of congress the state had in the census of 1860.
  • That land should be used to establish and fund educational institutions. Created many universities.
